Volcanic eruption in Tonga
  21 January 2022
Following the Hunga Tonga Hunga Haapai eruption, ICube-SERTIT was requested by the CNES to highlight the impact over the Tongan Islands within the framework of the International Charter Space & Major Disasters.
The maps below use post-event Pleiades and pre-event WorldView imagery over Hunga Tunga, Nomuka, and Nuku Alofa islands. The Hunga Tonga Hunga Haapai volcano caldera totally collapsed and large amounts of ash deposits are visible (grey colour) on each Tongan island. Nomuka island is particularly affected by coastal erosion with destroyed buildings being observed in addition to the ash deposits.
